She was young when she shifted to St. Cloud, Florida with her family.
She started singing at a young age.
Growing up, Mandy Harvey underwent several surgeries to correct her hearing problems.
The family later moved to Colorado.
As a result of the connective tissue disorder Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, she gradually lost her hearing ability.
Mandy Harvey was 18 years old when she lost her hearing completely. Following this, she quit music and went into depression. She eventually made a return and started her musical pursuits.
She won VSA’s International Young Soloist Award in 2011.
On America’s Got Talent, Mandy was given the Golden Buzzer by Simon Cowell.
Along with co-author Mark Atteberry, she published a memoir titled Sensing the Rhythm: Finding My Voice in a World Without Sound in 2017.
In a November 15, 2017, interview for the BBC, Mandy Harvey revealed that she was accused of promoting oralism (i.e. the education of deaf students through oral language by using lip reading, speech, and mimicking the mouth shapes and breathing patterns of speech) when she first took to the stage and has received death threats from within the Deaf community for promoting a “hearing” activity.
Harvey has served as an Ambassador for the nonprofit organization No Barriers to help disabled people overcome obstacles.
